Big hello to all anime fans around the world.
Hi, I am Ikemasa.
I am Japanese and live in Tokyo.
I like anime and manga.
This site explains in English the deeper meaning of anime as understood by the Japanese.
Difficulty of Japanese
In many cases, even native Japanese speakers like myself can understand the true meaning only after reading the Kanji and other characters depicted in the original manga.
Many types of Japanese characters
Japanese is written in Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana, and Romaji (Roman alphabet).
There are many meanings that cannot be conveyed in English translation, especially since Kanji itself has multiple meanings.
Furthermore, Japanese kanji characters are pronounced in two ways: on-yomi(音読み) and kun-yomi(訓読み).
Without Japanese characters, it is very difficult to understand the meaning and nuances of words.
Honorifics and onomatopoeia
The Japanese language has honorifics and countless onomatopoeia.
Honorific language(尊敬語), humble language(謙譲語) and polite language(丁寧語) are very difficult.
Understanding the nuances of onomatopoeia is also difficult for non-native Japanese speakers.
